Coloring k-colorable graphs using relatively small palettes

چکیده
We obtain the following new coloring results: A 3-colorable graph on n vertices with maximum degree can be colored, in polynomial time, using O(( log ) 1=3 logn) colors. This slightly improves an O(( 1=3 log ) logn) bound given by Karger, Motwani and Sudan. More generally, k-colorable graphs with maximum degree can be colored, in polynomial time, using O(( 1 2=k log ) logn) colors. A 4-colorable graph on n vertices can be colored, in polynomial time, using ~ O(n7=19) colors. This improves an ~ O(n2=5) bound given again by Karger, Motwani and Sudan. More generally, kcolorable graphs on n vertices can be colored, in polynomial time, using ~ O(n k ) colors, where 5 = 97=207, 6 = 43=79, 7 = 1391=2315, 8 = 175=271, . . . The rst result is obtained by a slightly more re ned probabilistic analysis of the semide nite programming based coloring algorithm of Karger, Motwani and Sudan. The second result is obtained by combining the coloring algorithm of Karger, Motwani and Sudan, the combinatorial coloring algorithms of Blum and an extension of a technique of Alon and Kahale (which is based on the Karger, Motwani and Sudan algorithm) for nding relatively large independent sets in graphs that are guaranteed to have very large independent sets. The extension of the Alon and Kahale result may be of independent interest.

متن کاملColoring Random and Semi-Random k-Colorable Graphs
The problem of coloring a graph with the minimum number of colors is well known to be NPhard, even restricted to k-colorable graphs for constant k 3. On the other hand, it is known that random k-colorable graphs are easy to k-color. The algorithms for coloring random kcolorable graphs require fairly high edge densities, however. In this paper we present algorithms that color randomly generated ...
متن کاملJ un 1 99 9 Some Concepts in List Coloring
In this paper uniquely list colorable graphs are studied. A graph G is called to be uniquely k–list colorable if it admits a k–list assignment from which G has a unique list coloring. The minimum k for which G is not uniquely k–list colorable is called the m–number of G. We show that every triangle–free uniquely colorable graph with chromatic number k+1, is uniquely k–list colorable. A bound fo...
متن کاملOn Coloring Resilient Graphs
We introduce a new notion of resilience for constraint satisfaction problems, with the goal of more precisely determining the boundary between NP-hardness and the existence of efficient algorithms for resilient instances. In particular, we study r-resiliently k-colorable graphs, which are those k-colorable graphs that remain k-colorable even after the addition of any r new edges. We prove lower...
متن کاملFinding Large Independent Sets
This lecture deals with the problem of proper vertex colorings of graphs. More speciically, we are interested in coloring a given 3-colorable graph with as few colors as we can. It is easy to see that it is NP-Hard to nd a 3 coloring for any given 3-colorable graph-this would enable deciding whether a general graph is 3-colorable. If a polynomial-time algorithm existed for 3-coloring a 3-colora...
